Civil unions are recognized since 2009, a couple in a civil union has the same rights as a married couple, however the partners can’t take each other’s surname and they can’t adopt children. Since 2012, the Constitution of Hungary has defined marriage as a union exclusively between a man and woman; effectively prohibiting same sex marriages.

In April of 2025, the Hungarian government passed a constitutional amendment giving the government the power to ban LGBT events and discussion of LGBT topics. The punishments may incur a fine for up 200,000 Forints (€500) or the loss of citizenship for participants and even 1 year imprisonment for organizers. Additionally, the government is reportedly now using facial recognition technology to enforce its censorship laws.

The books containing LGBTQ+ themes must be wrapped with plastics to comply the law.
Films like Harry Potter or Billy Elliot will be banned for under 18s and it will be broadcasted before 10pm.

In 2018, Hungary banned the teaching of gender studies in universities. The reason provided was that they did not want to consider it acceptable "to talk about socially constructed genders, rather than biological sexes".

In 2017, Hungary relaunched the process for legal gender recognition and did not require surgery, but it did require a medical diagnosis. However, even with these restrictions, there were reports that the government did not follow these requirements in practice by continuing to refuse recognition.
