The Supreme Court (Tribunal Supremo) issued a landmark ruling (STS of July 2, 1987) that overturned previous lower court denials and established jurisprudence allowing for the rectification of the sex entry in the Civil Registry. However, this judicial path was strictly conditioned on the applicant having undergone "irreversible physical changes," which courts interpreted as a mandatory requirement for gender reassignment surgery to align the body with the requested gender marker.
