Current Version

RegionMinnesota
IssueRight to change legal gender
StatusLegal, but requires medical diagnosis
Start DateJul 26, 2007
End Date(none)
DescriptionWhile there's no actual law support this, Minnesota's Department of Safety had quietly added X gender marker to their licenses. This is still in effect as of 2018, as they roll out REAL ID. Permits are also able to get X gender marker, as of 2018 as well. Although surgery is not required, a letter confirming “appropriate medical treatment” is.

  • Other "The documentation practices for gender marker changes on birth certificates, marriage records, and IDs in Minnesota seem to have been loosened. It appears that a name change court order may be sufficient (in addition to a "medical certification") as supporting documentation for birth and marriage certificate amendments IF it also directs a sex marker change. Changing state ID gender may now just be a matter of checking the corresponding box. Some of this is in statute but not entirely clear; some of this is in further admin guidance and in news reports.
