Revision by Sam01it. The previous edit was very incorrect because PM Giorgia Meloni did not restrict any adoption right of same-sex couples, which are still regulated by law 184/1983. Her government only restricted city mayors from permitting automatic parenthood on birth certificates to same-sex couples, which is not allowed by current laws.

- Note field is incorrect "the ministry of interior issued a directive in January 2023 instructing Italian mayors to stop automatically registering the births of children conceived or born abroad through assisted reproductive methods. It cited a case from December 2022, in which Italy’s top court ruled that a child of a gay couple who was conceived through surrogacy abroad shouldn’t have their birth certificate automatically transcribed in Italy invluding both same sex parents. Some mayors continued to register same sex couples children, but most of the mayors stopped registrations. The previous “Cirinnà Law” tried to formally introduce step-child adoption, but only a vague reference to it was actually made, leaving courts the freedom to register or not the second parent on the birth certificate.
