Entry #4930: Serving openly in military in Guinea-Bissau

Current Version

RegionGuinea-Bissau
IssueServing openly in military
StatusLesbians, gays, bisexuals permitted, transgender people banned
Start DateOct 13, 1993
End Date(none)
DescriptionIn Guinea-Bissau, LGB people do not appear to be expressly banned from military service, and consensual same-sex conduct has been legal since the 1993 Penal Code reform, but open LGB military service is not clearly protected because the country lacks explicit sexual orientation employment protections and I have not found a military status law expressly guaranteeing such service; transgender service remains especially uncertain because gender identity is not expressly protected and there is no clear legal gender recognition framework.
