DescriptionThe foundational framework for modifying official public records in Greece, including the correction or update of birth certificates and personal registration entries, was established through the Civil Registry Law (Περί ληξιαρχικών πράξεων) on June 11th, 1976. While Law 344/1976 did not originally reference self-identified gender identity, it provided the bureaucratic mechanism (a court order via judicial proceedings) needed to rectify legal records. Its subsequent amendments, however, through laws 2505/1997 and 4144/2013 mentioned the matter of legal sex recognition by name.

In order for sex to be redetermined, a decision by the Magistrate's Court (Ειρηνοδικείο) was required. The judge required certification on behalf of the interested person that they had undergone a medical sex reassignment procedure resulting in the definitive prevalence of the desired sex, while simultaneously requiring a certificate showing that they were supervised by a psychiatrist and had been diagnosed with "transsexualism" or "gender dysphoria."
