| Description | Gender reassignment surgeries are covered by National Health Insurance; however, regulatory restrictions remain. Access to state-funded gender reassignment treatments is subject to approval by the National Medical Committee for Sex Reassignment. Circular 16/2014, which repeals the previous regulations, updates the guidelines for performing sex reassignment surgeries. Requirements for approval include that the applicant must be at least 18 years old (Section 4.2.1), proof of at least 12 months of living with the requested gender identity, a psychological recommendation, and a psychiatric diagnosis. Furthermore, the medical committee has the authority to make approval of the surgery conditional on the use of hormones. Gender-affirming vaginoplasty is performed only at Sheba Hospital. According to national regulations, transgender people wishing to begin hormone therapy before the age of 18 require parental consent. |
