| Description | Since 2023, Tennessee has banned minors under the age of 18 from accessing gender-affirming care. Since 2024, Tennessee banned transgender prisoners from accessing gender-affirming care; medically detransitioning them unless they were incarcerated prior to April 2024. The same year; Tenncare Medicaid program excluded gender-affirming care coverage for transgender individuals. Since April 2026, Ambetter Insurance, owned by the largest provider of Medicare and Medicaid insurances in the nation, has stopped covering hormones and other transition medicine for trans adults. This is the first known insurance company to deny care in a large swath of states as the broader trend of restricting gender-affirming care continues. Since May 2026, Tennessee has begun making a yearly public list of trans people that access official routes of gender-affirming care as mandated by HB 754 signed by Governor Bill Lee on May 7th and effective the same day. The law requires; the name of the prescriber, the dosages, frequency of dosages, any trans affirming surgeries, and mental health history to be reported to the health department for that database, any clinic that does not comply with giving that data could be fined 150k USD and their prescriber to lose their license for half a year, requires the state health department to make annual reports of said data, prohibits counties from banning conversion therapy, and requires prescibers and medical insurance to provide "detransition care" while making medical transition harder. |
