Description | Some Brazilian states have censored LGBTQIA+ topics; some state lawmakers have made bills banning “indoctrination” or “gender ideology” in schools. Considerations were made since 2014 with the first taking effect in 2015. Some would be repealed by the Supreme Court but others have continued to have bans in place. In 2020, the Supreme Court of Brazil ruled that attempts at censoring LGBTIQ+ content and expression in schools violate the constitution. However, not all laws, both before and after the ruling, have been struck down leaving a sense of ambiguity in the legality of the laws remaining. |

edited by DaisyGeekyTrans. Adding info about the 2020 ruling which leaves some ambiguity into the legality of the laws still in place. May change those entries after discussions with other EqualDex users as it’s still debated.

- Newer law has been passed ""Even though some states and municipalities tried to pass laws enforcing censorship towards LGBTQ topics, they were never enforced and are always repealed by the Supreme Court since censorship is deemed unconstitutional. I tried to modify the information but for some reason I can't, since I'm being told I need to add an end date, but legislation like this hasn't been in place since 1988 - when our constitution was written -, and there's already an entry saying the same thing. https://www.planalto.gov.br/ccivil_03/constituicao/constituicao.htm""
- Status is not correct "In Brazil, laws protecting LGBT people—such as those against homophobia and censorship—are established at the federal level. In the past, a few cities attempted to pass local laws that discriminated against LGBT individuals, but every single time, the Supreme Court struck them down. According to the Brazilian Constitution, from 1988, any attempt to censor or discriminate against LGBT people is not only illegal but can also result in up to eight years in prison. A few lawmakers were even arrested or fined for trying to do so.
