Description | On 6 December 2022, the Indonesian Parliament passed a new penal code. It contains provisions contrary to international human rights law prohibiting in particular sexual relations outside marriage and cohabitation of unmarried couples. This decision is seen by human rights NGOs as an attack on the privacy of individuals and a way to further persecute LGBTQI+ people. Although homosexuality is officially legal in Indonesia – except in the province of Aceh – the LGBTQI+ community has been under increased pressure in recent years, de facto exacerbating discrimination and violence against them. How does the radicalization of the Indonesian government’s position against the LGBTQI+ community translate into exponential discrimination and violence? |
