Description | On 6 December 2022, the Indonesian Parliament passed a new penal code [1]. It contains provisions contrary to international human rights law prohibiting in particular sexual relations outside marriage and cohabitation of unmarried couples [2]. This decision is seen by human rights NGOs as an attack on the privacy of individuals and a way to further persecute LGBTQI+ people[3]. Although homosexuality is officially legal in Indonesia [4] – except in the province of Aceh [5] – the LGBTQI+ community has been under increased pressure in recent years, de facto exacerbating discrimination and violence against them. How does the radicalization of the Indonesian government’s position against the LGBTQI+ community translate into exponential discrimination and violence? |
