Current Version

RegionGreece
IssueServing openly in military
StatusLegal
Start DateMay 9, 2025
End Date(none)
DescriptionLaw 5195/2025, Article 61, Paragraph 3(d) repealed Presidential Decree 11/2014, which had prohibited transgender individuals from enlisting. As a result, there is currently no legislation barring transgender individuals from serving in the military.

However, a transgender person who was assigned male at birth and is therefore subject to mandatory conscription may request an exemption if they wish to avoid service. It should be noted that if they have not legally changed their gender, such an exemption is not guaranteed.

  • Status is not correct "The second link refers to the Presidential Decree 11/2014 which has been abolished by Law 5195/2025, Article 61, Paragraph 3(d): https://www.kodiko.gr/nomothesia/diataksi/1161124 The first link refers to Law 3421/2005 which has been amended by Law 5195/2025 and does not mention that trans people are specifically banned from serving in the military. As a result, if a transgender person wishes to serve in the Greek military, there is no law preventing them from doing so. However, a person who is transgender and the assigned gender at birth was male, therefore is obliged to serve in the military, can ask to be exempt from military prescription if they wish to avoid it (although, if they have not legally changed their gender, an exemption is not guaranteed)."
