| Description | In Mauritania, there are zero federal laws that explicitly mention "transgender" or "gender identity". Instead, transgender individuals are targeted using Sharia-based penal codes, but the authorizes apply these public decency and debauchery statutes to arrest individuals for non-conforming gender expressions or "imitating the opposite sex" as police previously arrested groups of individuals and sentenced them to two-year prison terms under Article 306 simply for what authorities termed "imitating women" at a private celebration, as they risk immediate arrest and prosecution under Article 306 for offending public indecency. |
