DescriptionIn 2013, California passed a law stating that public schools shall allow pupils to use facilities that align with their gender identity.

In 2016, California passed a law requiring single-occupancy restrooms in every business, place of public accommodation, and government agency to be gender-neutral. It went into effect in 2017.

In 2023, California passed a law requiring all schools to have at least one gender-neutral bathroom, unless they had only one bathroom for male students and only one for female students. It went into effect in 2026.

Under Cal. Civ. Code § 51(b), business establishments, non-profits, and government agencies that serve the public cannot stop someone from entering a restroom that matches their gender identity.
